The courthouse on the square was the county's second courthouse and was completed in 1889. It was used until 2007 and was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1975. In 1990, the steeple had to be replaced due to water damage and lack of maintenance. The new steeple is an exact replica of the old one, as required for buildings on the Register. The first picture below is of the courthouse when it was first completed, with scaffolding still around the steeple.

Mr. & Mrs. A.O. Allison and their two children, Sam and Wilma, appear in their 1913 Model Ford Roadster, purchased in 1914.

The Allisons were the first car owners in Clay County. However, the first automobile driven into Clay County was owned and operated by Dr. Samual F. O'Neil, who lived in Clarskville, GA. He and his wife and their two small children came to Clay County in a 1912 Model Ford Roadster in the latter part of June, 1914. A few years later they moved to Clay County.
